Probably a videocard problem

Try updating drivers and check if your graphics card's fan is actually working. Dust it off and try again. Make sure your case is well ventilated and/or move your computer to a different location.

Also, give the brand of your graphics card + model number. Might help us see if there are any defects (complaints via other forums, articles, etc.) Also check if there is a factory warranty or something along those lines for the card.

I actually updated my drivers a week before this happened so that isn't the problem my case is well ventilated and I'll dust it off tommrow. My current card is a 8800 GTS and I'm getting a gtx 260 so if it is a problem with a gpu it will be replaced soon. I'm guessing the gpu is plain dead Ive had for almost 4 years

Could be electromagnetic interference, you might have moved something that causes EMI near the monitor... telephones etc.

The graphics card maybe overheating and i'd echo lemonz advice about cleaning out the case, fans and the ventilation/air circulation.

Also, it can be the graphics card's driver has gone corrupt, reinstall or roll back the driver.

Another fix is that Nvidia's (I dont know if you got a Nvidia card) 196.71 Beta drivers can cause the fans not to operate properly, which would cause overheating.

That's exactly what I was thinking, there's been quite a few reports of that now and it's on NVIDIA's driver page, if you updated recently and you think it might have been them ROLL BACK NOW before your GPU overheats and dies, also they weren't beta drivers hertz, they were actually WHQL certified for a few days before the problem emerged and NVIDIA pulled them from their website.

196.75 Alert!
We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.co.uk. Until we can verify and root cause this issue, we recommend that customers do not download this driver. Instead, please stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our website and we also are asking our partners and others to remove temporarily this 196.75 WHQL driver as well.

For helping on rolling back:

Personally I would just completely uninstall your new drivers and reinstall the older ones, better safe than sorry.

Melancholy.

Thought it was some sort of melon/cauliflower hybrid food when I first heard of it. My dreams of this amazing food were shattered and I have hated it ever since.

Ahhh thanks, I was told it was the beta drivers, not the actual WHQL drivers.

Augfist, As you got a Nvidia and you recently updated the drivers, its most likely the 196.71 driver killing the card, rollback or reinstall the driver.
